Evangelion 1
In Evangelion #1, the first angel attacks Tokyo 3. A N-2 mine does nothing to it. Misato Katsuragi comes to pick up Shinji at the train station when they get hit by the shock wave of the N-2 mine. They make their way to Nerv and Shinji sees his father for the first time in 3 years. After a heated discussion with his father, he decides to pilot Eva unit 1. Shinji also meets Rei for the first time too. He then goes to face the first angel, but he gets beaten pretty bad. You then see Shinji wake up in a hospital, and he doesn't know what happened. Gendo is in a meeting with Seele and they question his priorities. Shinji doesn't want to live with his father so he insists on living alone, but Misato makes him live with her. At the end of the episode you see what happened in the fight between Unit 01 and the Angel. All connections are lost to Unit 01 and it goes berserk. It regenerates its own arm, nullifies the angels AT-field (Absolute Terror), and then beats the crap out of the angel with one of the angels own spikes. The angel then self destructs making a blast as powerful as an N-2 mine and Unit 01 comes through it all unscathed. That is until it deactivates. Then the head falls off and you get a glimpse of a real eye where the metal one was before. Freaky.
Evangelion 2
We Start episode 3 with Shinji practicing in an entry plug. Misato has a talk with Ritsuko aobut Shinji. Misato thinks that Shinji has no friends. They then get into a long conversation about Shinji's coping devices. We then go to Shinji's school where we meet Toji Suzahara and Ida. Toji's little sister was injured during the Angel attack, and Toji's just a little mad at the pilot of Unit 01. After class Toji punches Shinji twice because of his sister. Rei tells Shinji that there is another emergency and they go to Nerv. Another Angel has shown its ugly face in Tokyo-3. Tokyo-3 then goes into defense mode where all of the sky scrapers go underground into the geofront. Ida and Toji come up with a plan to escape and see Unit 01. Unit 01 is launched and we see that Toji and Ida have made it out. Shinji screws up his shot at the angel, and it promptly breaks his rifle. He barely escapes a thrashing, but he loses his ambilical cord. He has five minute of power left. The angel then tosses him about a half a mile and he almost lands on top of Toji and Ida. He holds off the angel from harming Toji and Ida. They are let into the main entry plug. They create noise in the cock-pit and Shinji's sync-ratio goes down. Misato then tells Shinji to retreate but instead he uses his vibro-knife and kills the angel. Toji and Ida come to Misato's house to see if Shinji's O.K. Shinji has run away and rides a train until it stops, and then he goes to a movie. He then goes a little crazy finds Ida camping out, and is caught the next day. Misato thought that he ran away because she yelled at him after the encounter with the last angel. When Shinji gets back, Misato yells at Shinji again. He then decides to go home, but then at the last minute Misato comes to the train station to get him.
